Adelaide 16-19 January
Friday 17th January
Breakfast at The Playford Hotel which is very central and just opposite the railway station. The hotel has been built in an old Art Deco style on the site of Rupert Murdoch's SA office, and is excellent whilst offering something slightly different from the standard modern hotel.
Roger Tagg (54-59) kindly offered to show us something of the Barossa Valley.
Roger met us at our hotel and drove us out of the city.
Our first stop was Chateau Barrosa. Note the different spelling. It is thought that this was the original version. We had a light lunch and a glass of wine of course......not Roger who was driving.
We then Stopped at Jacob's Creek a well known brand and had a look around. Very much a tourist set up.
It was then off to Menglers look out where we had a great view over the Valley plain...as that is really what it is.
We then stopped for a short walk at the Kaiserstahl conservation park and did a couple of km loop. Saw two kangaroos and several birds.
And finally a stop for tea (of course) at Mount Pleasant on the way back to Adelaide.
Many thanks to Roger for driving us around and for the opportunity to get to know another OM.
Saturday 18th January.
This morning we took a short stroll across the river to the Adelaide Oval, famous for cricket. It has been redeveloped in recent times; reopened in 2014. We managed to walk in and see the playing field
and there was a Bradman exhibition to which we shall return as we didn't have time. Needed to get back to the hotel to prepare to meet Roger and Sue to catch a tram together to Glenelg where we meeting a few others for an OM lunch.
Met with Roger (54 - 59) and Sue Tagg and took tram from central Adelaide to Glenelg which is a seafront resort on the Gulf of St Vincent. There we met with John ( 44-48) and Margaret Fereday and John Newson (50 - 59 Belmont/MHS) at Sammy's on the Marina where we shared an excellent lunch. Unfortunately Emma Goodall couldn't join us.
All 3 OMs had been in Adelaide for quite a long time. John Fereday (JF) had emigrated in 1948 after
leaving school to follow his father. JF had joined the school in St Bees and then moved back to London. JN had come for family reasons after retiring and RT had come to work at the University of SA moving from NZ.
JN brought with him some photos of the Queen's visit to the school in 1957. He was a member of the swimming team which put on a display on the day. Amazingly, it turned out that JN and myself had grown up one street apart in North London.

Day to ourselves wandering around Adelaide. Spent the morning back at the Adelaide Oval and happened on a tour of the stadium which was very interesting with all its history despite the new and impressive developments.
